Kawasi Lakhma Takes Refuge in Malkangiri After Supreme Court Bail

Former Chhattisgarh minister Kawasi Lakhma has taken temporary refuge in Odisha’s Malkangiri district after being granted conditional bail by the Supreme Court on February 4, 2026.

The court barred him from entering Chhattisgarh, prompting his relocation across the state border.

Upon arrival, Lakhma received a warm welcome from local Congress workers, who see his presence as a morale boost for the party in the region.

Addressing supporters, he pledged to respect the Supreme Court’s directives and confirmed he would remain in Malkangiri instead of returning to Chhattisgarh.

Lakhma, arrested earlier in connection with a liquor scam, now plans to collaborate with the Malkangiri district Congress unit to continue political activities.

His stay is expected to influence cross‑border party dynamics, strengthening Congress’s organisational presence in Odisha’s border district.
