Kandhamal Maoist Leader Kills Comrade Over Surrender Plans, Body Exhumed
In a chilling revelation from Kandhamal, Odisha, Maoist leader Shukru allegedly murdered fellow cadre Anwesh, fearing his intention to surrender would weaken the group’s morale.
Anwesh, a Divisional Committee Member from Chhattisgarh carrying a bounty of Rs 22 lakh, was killed on January 29, 2026, and buried in the Tarabadi forest.
Acting on intelligence, police exhumed his body on February 25.
Kandhamal SP confirmed the murder and post‑mortem, noting that surrendered Maoists revealed the killing was meant to deter others from defecting.
The incident highlights growing paranoia within CPI (Maoist) ranks as police pressure intensifies in Kandhamal, a stronghold of left‑wing extremism.
Reports suggest several cadres are exploring surrender routes but fear reprisals from within the organisation.
