Kalahandi Court Hands 8-Year Jail Term for Brutal Assault
Bhawanipatna, Odisha – In a significant ruling, the Bhawanipatna Additional District Judge-cum-Special Judge Vigilance has sentenced Uttam Majhi of Karmata village to eight years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 for a violent assault case.
According to police records, Majhi attacked a youth from Kundabandh village inside his home with a sharp weapon, leaving the victim critically injured.
The victim’s father, Sadanand Majhi, lodged a complaint that led to Case No. 146/23 being registered.
Following an investigation by then-Sub Inspector Loris Pradhan, Majhi was charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 294, 452, 323, 324, 326, 307, and 506.
The court awarded five years of imprisonment with a Rs 10,000 fine under one section and three years with a Rs 10,000 fine under another, combining the sentences into a total of eight years.
Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one-year jail term.
This verdict underscores the judiciary’s firm stance against violent crimes in Odisha, sending a strong message of deterrence to offenders.
