Jharsuguda Police Van Crash Claims Five Lives, CM Announces Ex-Gratia
Jharsuguda, Odisha – In a tragic accident early Sunday morning, five police personnel lost their lives when their SUV collided head-on with a gravel-laden tipper truck on National Highway 49 near Jharsuguda Sadar Police Station.
The victims, identified as constables Kasiram Bhoi and Debendra Sa, havildar Lingaraj Dharua, sub-inspector Niranjan Kujur, and home guard Bhakta Bandhu Mirdha, were returning from a colleague’s wedding in Rengali when the crash occurred.
Three others sustained critical injuries and are undergoing treatment.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow and announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for each bereaved family.
Former CM Naveen Patnaik also extended condolences. A guard of honour was accorded to the fallen officers as tributes poured in from across the state.
Police have arrested the truck driver and launched an investigation into possible causes, including speeding and negligence.
Families of the victims have demanded a thorough inquiry and enhanced support for dependents.
This devastating incident has cast a shadow over Odisha’s law enforcement community, highlighting the risks officers face even outside duty hours.
