( OT Webdesk)Manipur witnessed renewed unrest as violent protests erupted on Saturday evening, prompting the state government to suspend internet and mobile data services for five days starting June 7.
The decision comes amid escalating tensions between demonstrators and security forces in Imphal’s valley districts.
The Bishnupur district has been placed under curfew, while prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been enforced in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching, restricting gatherings of five or more people.
At approximately 2 AM on Sunday, Manipur Police confirmed the developments via X (formerly Twitter), sharing official orders related to movement restrictions and internet suspension.
Authorities cited public safety concerns, warning that inflammatory content and social media misinformation could escalate violence and disrupt communal harmony.
The unrest was triggered by the arrest of five members of Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei community group, including one of its commanders.
In retaliation, a mob stormed the Kwakeithel Police Outpost in Imphal West, demanding their release. Security forces responded with warning shots to disperse the crowd, leading to injuries, including two journalists.
Protests also broke out in Moreh, near the India-Myanmar border, following the detention of a Kuki-Zo individual. While the situation remains volatile, no reports of violence have emerged from the border town.
Despite the escalating situation, the Manipur administration has yet to issue a formal statement on the sudden unrest. The state, which has faced prolonged ethnic and political tensions, remains in a fragile peace.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with security forces deployed across key locations to maintain law and order.
Residents have been urged to comply with movement restrictions and avoid spreading unverified information online.
