Inter-Caste Marriage Sparks Tensions in Ganjam, Nine Named in FIR
Chhatrapur police have registered a case against nine individuals in Munisipentha village of Ganjam district after allegations of humiliation and social exclusion faced by the family of OAS officer Saudagar Behera.
According to the complaint filed by his father, Bijay Behera, the family was asked to leave a community wedding feast and was insulted in front of attendees.
He alleged that the incident reflects ongoing social pressure since his son’s inter-caste marriage outside the Kaibarta community.
Police have filed an FIR naming nine members of the Kaibarta community and are reviewing witness statements and evidence. Discussions between the family and community representatives failed to reach a resolution.
Community leaders denied any formal decision to ostracise the family, though they acknowledged disagreements over inter-caste marriage.
The Kaibarta Samaj announced plans for a wider dialogue involving senior leaders, Mahasabha representatives, and the family to maintain social harmony.
Despite pressure, Bijay Behera affirmed he will not sever ties with his son or daughter-in-law and expressed willingness to participate in dialogue without compromising family relationships.
