Indravati Reservoir on Alert as Cyclone Montha Triggers Water Level Surge

Nabarangpur,  October 27, 2025 — With Cyclone Montha intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, authorities have issued a high alert for the Indravati reservoir in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district.

The cyclone’s impact has led to continuous rainfall across southern Odisha, raising fears of a sudden surge in the reservoir’s water level.

The dam authorities have warned that water discharge may begin at any moment, urging residents in downstream areas to remain vigilant.

The reservoir, which has a maximum holding capacity of 642 meters, is nearing critical levels due to persistent showers.

Rainfall has already begun in districts like Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, and Malkangiri. Gajapati district reported overcast skies, cool winds, and intermittent drizzle since early morning.

The administration has responded swiftly—closing all schools and Anganwadi centres, cancelling government employee leave, and advising citizens to stay indoors.

The India Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall for the next three days, with increasing intensity likely.

Hilly regions are particularly vulnerable, and local residents are growing anxious about potential flooding and crop damage.

As Cyclone Montha edges closer to landfall, Odisha’s disaster response teams remain on standby, prepared for emergency evacuations and relief operations.
