(OT Webdesk)In a major upgrade aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and meeting surging demand, Indian Railways has announced a 50% increase in coach capacity for the Puri–Rourkela Vande Bharat Express.
Starting August 7, 2025, the semi-high-speed train will operate with 16 coaches—double its current configuration.
The new composition includes 12 AC Chair Car coaches, 2 Executive Chair Cars, and 2 Crew Chair Cars.
This expansion is expected to ease waitlists and accommodate the growing number of commuters, business travelers, and tourists relying on this route.
The train, which covers 505 km in approximately 7.5 hours, has recorded impressive occupancy rates—112.76% from Puri to Rourkela and 127.64% on the return leg.
Operating six days a week (excluding Tuesdays), it departs Puri at 5:00 AM and Rourkela at 2:10 PM, with key stoppages at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Talcher Road, Angul, Rairakhol, Sambalpur City, and Jharsuguda.
Indian Railways views this move as a strategic step toward modernising transport infrastructure, boosting regional connectivity, and supporting Odisha’s tourism and economic growth.
The Puri–Rourkela Vande Bharat Express continues to stand as a symbol of progressive rail travel in India.
