India’s long wait for ICC glory ended in spectacular fashion as Harmanpreet Kaur’s team lifted their maiden Women’s World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Batting first, India posted a formidable 298/7, thanks to Shafali Verma’s explosive 87 and Deepti Sharma’s composed 58. Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues provided crucial support, while Richa Ghosh’s late blitz ensured a strong finish.
South Africa’s chase was anchored by Laura Wolvaardt, who scored a valiant 101, becoming only the second player to hit centuries in both a semifinal and final. However, Deepti Sharma’s five-wicket haul and Shafali’s golden arm turned the tide, sealing India’s historic triumph.
