India Accelerates Iron Ore Mining to Strengthen Steel Industry

Odisha Vigilance SIT probe illegal mining

India has taken bold strides to bolster its iron ore production and reduce dependence on imports, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the steel industry to fast-track mining at unused sites.

Speaking at the India Steel 2025 conference, Modi emphasised challenges like securing raw materials and encouraged innovations such as coal gasification to create a sustainable future for steel production.

Between April and August 2024, India’s iron ore production surged by 7.4%, reaching 116 million tonnes due to rising demand from sectors like construction and automotive. In the financial year 2024-25, the country produced 263 million tonnes, cementing its global position among the top iron ore producers.

This initiative aligns with Modi’s vision to make India a global leader in steel manufacturing, backed by improved domestic mining, international collaborations, and robust supply chain strategies. As these measures unfold, India’s steel industry is poised for significant transformation and growth.
