IMD Warns of Intensifying Low-Pressure System Over Bay of Bengal; Coastal States on Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert as a low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal shows signs of intensifying.

Originating from a cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above sea level, the system is moving west-northwestward and is expected to strengthen within the next 24 hours.

Currently, squally weather with wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is affecting the southeast Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the east-central Bay of Bengal.

IMD forecasts indicate that wind speeds will rise to 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph on October 25 and 26, and may further intensify to 55–65 kmph with gusts reaching 75 kmph by October 27 across the west-central, southwest, and east-central Bay of Bengal.

Coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are also expected to experience squally conditions with wind speeds up to 55 kmph during October 25–26, with a possibility of further intensification. Authorities have urged fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and advised coastal communities to remain vigilant.

Officials continue to monitor the system’s trajectory and potential impact on maritime operations and coastal safety.
