Odisha heavy rainfall alert

IMD Issues Yellow Warning: Odisha Braces for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

Bhubaneswar, September 13 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow weather warning for 30 districts across Odisha, as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensifies.

The system is expected to move northwestward, triggering widespread rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms, particularly in southern Odisha.

Districts including Kalahandi, Nabarangapur, Koraput, and Malkangiri are forecasted to receive heavy downpours accompanied by winds reaching 30–40 km/h. In addition, a separate yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning has been issued for 24 districts, raising concerns over public safety and infrastructure resilience.

The IMD has also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea, as rough conditions are expected to prevail on Sunday. Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and follow safety advisories.

Meanwhile, the department noted that conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the monsoon from parts of western Rajasthan starting September 15, signalling a seasonal shift across the subcontinent.

Local administrations have been advised to prepare for emergency response, and citizens are encouraged to monitor updates from official channels.
