Bhubaneswar, May 31, ( OT Webdesk)– The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for northern Odisha as a deep depression over Bangladesh continues to trigger heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the region.
Some areas are expected to receive more than 20 cm of rain, increasing the risk of flash floods and waterlogging.
IMD officials report that cloud bands and moisture-laden winds have intensified precipitation, particularly in eastern and northeastern Odisha.
Alongside the Red Alert, an Orange Alert has been issued for districts such as Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Bargarh, which may experience gusty winds (40–50 kmph), lightning, and moderate thunderstorms.
Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid open areas during lightning, and secure outdoor objects to prevent damage.
Additionally, banana plantations, standing crops, and weak structures remain vulnerable in the wake of these extreme weather conditions.
In a significant development, the southwest monsoon has advanced into southern Odisha ahead of schedule.
The monsoon, which typically arrives in mid-June, entered Kerala earlier than expected and is set to progress into central and northern Odisha within the next few days.
IMD urges citizens, particularly farmers and those living in low-lying areas, to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow precautionary measures during this active weather phase.
