IMD Issues Alerts as Heavy Showers Loom Over Odisha Till May 30

( OT Webdesk)Odisha is bracing for intense rainfall as a low-pressure system forms over the Bay of Bengal, triggering widespread showers and thunderstorms across the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather disturbances will persist until May 30, accompanied by gusty winds and heightened precipitation.

The IMD has issued day-wise warnings for various districts:

  • May 25: Orange alert for Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, and Ganjam due to gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph.
  • May 26: Yellow alert for Rayagada, Gajapati, Koraput, and Mayurbhanj.
  • May 27: Heavy rainfall warnings extend to Sundargarh, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, and Puri.
  • May 28: Strong winds and significant precipitation are forecasted for Balasore, Jajpur, and Ganjam.

Adding to the weather concerns, the southwest monsoon has arrived in Kerala eight days ahead of schedule.

Meteorologists anticipate an early onset in Odisha as well, possibly advancing from its usual arrival period between June 10–12.

Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions, particularly in flood-prone districts. The IMD continues to monitor the evolving system closely for further intensification.
