IMD forecasts formation of low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), May 20: According to the latest reports from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area is expected to develop over the Southwest Bay of Bengal by around May 22.

This system is anticipated to initially move northeastward, eventually intensifying into a depression over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted at isolated places in North Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on May 24 and May 25. As a precautionary measure, fishermen are advised against venturing into the central Bay of Bengal from May 23 and into the North Bay of Bengal from May 24 onward. Fishermen currently at sea are urged to return to the coast before May 23.

The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has alerted district collectors about the potential formation of a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal as predicted by the IMD. The SRC has issued an advisory emphasizing the need for vigilance and readiness among district administrations.

The advisory highlights the likelihood of light to moderate rain and thundershowers in certain districts of Odisha and stresses the importance of closely monitoring the weather system and being prepared for any potential consequences.
