IIT Bhubaneswar Pioneers India’s First Digital Substation with CPM System

IIT Bhubaneswar has achieved a major milestone in India’s smart grid journey by commissioning an advanced digital substation equipped with a Centralised Monitoring and Protection (CPM) system at its 33/11 kV campus substation.

The project, inaugurated by Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary of Energy and E&IT Department, Government of Odisha, marks a breakthrough in real-time monitoring and protection of electrical distribution networks.

Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, and other dignitaries were present at the launch.

Executed under the National Perspective Plan (NPP) of the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bengaluru, Ministry of Power, the initiative was led by Prof. S. R. Samantaray from the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The system integrates Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and introduces intelligent merging units in place of physical Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).

The CPM framework also supports a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), enhancing grid intelligence, flexibility, and reliability.

This innovation strengthens IIT Bhubaneswar’s commitment to sustainable energy infrastructure and aligns with national energy priorities.
