Bhubaneswar, May 11, 2025 (OT Webdesk) – The Indian government has announced plans to construct a bridge over Chilika Lake, connecting Satapada to Jahnikuda in the Krishna Prasad block
This project aims to improve transportation infrastructure, eliminating the need for hazardous ferry travel and enhancing accessibility in the region.
A subcommittee conducted a feasibility study and recommended minimising the number of pillars to preserve the lake’s biodiversity, particularly safeguarding the habitat of the rare Irrawaddy dolphins.
Environmentalists have raised concerns about potential disruptions to marine life, urging authorities to implement protective measures.
The proposed bridge, spanning 7.74 kilometres, will be a four-lane structure with pedestrian walkways. Officials anticipate increased tourism and economic growth following its completion.
To mitigate adverse environmental effects, regulations are being discussed, including restrictions on unauthorised construction and a sustainable development plan.
Authorities are working closely with experts to ensure the project strikes a balance between modernisation and conservation, allowing Odisha’s rich ecosystem to thrive alongside infrastructure advancements.
