Hirakud Dam Opens Four Gates Amid Rising Water Levels, Public Alert Issued

Sambalpur(OT Webdesk) — In response to persistent heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, authorities at the Hirakud Dam have opened four of its gates to manage the surging inflow and safeguard the reservoir’s structural integrity.

The Chief Engineer confirmed the move, emphasising the need for controlled discharge to prevent overflow and mitigate downstream flooding risks. The dam’s water level has been steadily rising, prompting swift action from officials.

A public alert has been issued, urging residents to stay away from the banks of the Mahanadi River. With the monsoon intensifying across Odisha, district administrations are on high alert and coordinating closely to ensure public safety.

Hirakud Dam, one of Asia’s longest earthen dams, plays a pivotal role in flood control and irrigation across the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are prepared to take further action if necessary.
