Sambalpur, (OT Webdesk)— In a decisive flood-control measure, authorities at Hirakud Dam opened four additional sluice gates today, raising the total to eight active gates.
This action follows persistent monsoon inflow in the upstream Mahanadi basin, prompting urgent water release to prevent reservoir pressure buildup.
Currently, five gates on the left spillway and three on the right are discharging excess floodwater. Officials from the Water Resources Department emphasised the move as critical to maintaining dam integrity and ensuring downstream safety.
Hirakud Dam, Asia’s longest earthen dam, remains central to Odisha’s flood management strategy. With monsoon conditions intensifying, local administrations in Sambalpur and surrounding districts have been placed on alert.
Disaster response teams are actively monitoring the situation, and residents along riverbanks are advised to stay informed through official forecasts and avoid travel in flood-prone zones.
