Hirakud Dam Opens 20 Gates Amid Rising Waters and Heavy Rainfall
Sambalpur, Odisha — In response to relentless rainfall and surging inflow from the Mahanadi River’s upper catchment, authorities at Hirakud Dam have opened 20 gates to release excess water.
The move, which includes 13 gates on the left and 7 on the right, is a precautionary measure to prevent flooding and ensure dam safety.
Officials confirmed that the decision was prompted by a low-pressure system triggering widespread rainfall across Odisha. Residents in low-lying areas and along riverbanks have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near the riverbed.
Hirakud Dam, one of Asia’s longest earthen dams, plays a pivotal role in flood control and irrigation across the region.
With the monsoon intensifying, dam authorities are closely monitoring reservoir levels and inflow patterns to ensure timely interventions.
Local administration has activated emergency protocols and is coordinating with disaster response teams to safeguard life and property. Public advisories have been issued across Sambalpur and neighbouring districts.
