Hirakud Dam Opens 12 Gates Amid Heavy Rainfall Across Odisha

SAMBALPUR, July 25(OT Webdesk)— In response to intense rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, authorities at Hirakud Dam have opened 12 sluice gates to release excess floodwater.

The move comes after four additional gates were activated Friday morning, supplementing the eight already operational.

According to the Water Resources Department, eight gates on the left bank and four on the right are currently discharging water from the swelling reservoir.

Over 50mm of rainfall has been recorded in 43 blocks across 15 districts, raising concerns about rising river levels and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Chief Engineer Chandrasekhar Padhi stated that further gate operations will depend on rainfall patterns and reservoir status.

Despite the surge, river levels remain below danger marks, and officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

Residents in vulnerable zones have been advised to stay alert as Odisha braces for continued monsoon activity.
