Bhubaneswar, June 17, (OT Webdesk) – A low-pressure area has developed over Southwest Bangladesh and adjacent Gangetic West Bengal, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today.
This weather system formed around 5:30 AM and is expected to intensify within the next 24 hours as it moves west-northwest, significantly affecting the weather in Odisha.
The IMD forecast predicts widespread rainfall across Odisha until June 19, with moderate to heavy showers expected in several districts. Specifically, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore will likely experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Wind speeds in certain areas could reach between 30–40 km/h.
Weather experts indicate that the southwest monsoon is strengthening, allowing it to advance deeper into Odisha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh. This intensifying monsoon flow is likely to result in broader coverage and more intense rainfall.
The IMD has advised residents—especially those in low-lying or flood-prone areas—to remain vigilant and avoid waterlogged zones. Local authorities have been put on high alert and are prepared to respond to any emergencies.
Rainfall activity is expected to continue through Wednesday, with warnings of isolated extremely heavy rain. The public is encouraged to monitor updates from the IMD closely.
