Heavy rains likely in Odisha till September 27 due to twin low-pressure systems: IMD
Bhubaneswar, Sep 23 (UNI) Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across several parts of Odisha over the next five days due to twin low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
According to IMD sources, a low-pressure area formed today over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and north Odisha.
The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and is expected to persist over the region for the next 24 hours before weakening.
Currently, a trough extends from the cyclonic circulation over coastal Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha to Telangana across Odisha, at a height of 1.5–3.1 km above mean sea level.
Another trough runs from the upper-air cyclonic circulation over the same region to the south Maharashtra coast, passing over Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and north interior Karnataka, between 4.5–5.8 km above mean sea level.
The IMD further stated that another low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal around September 25.
It is expected to move nearly westwards and intensify into a depression over the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal, off the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coasts, by September 26.
The depression is likely to make landfall along the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 27.
Under its influence, squally weather with winds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, is expected from September 23 to 27 over the North Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coasts.
Sea conditions are likely to be rough to very rough, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the waters during this period.
The IMD has issued yellow and orange warnings for several districts.
Meanwhile, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has instructed districts under these warnings to keep administrative machinery ready for any eventuality.
Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and seek safe shelter during thunderstorms to protect against lightning.
The District collectors have been asked to report any damage caused by thunderstorms, whirlwinds, hailstorms, lightning, or heavy rainfall.
