Heavy Rainfall Warning for Odisha: Monsoon Surge to Hit Northern Districts Till July 16
Bhubaneswar, July 12(OT Webdesk) — The Regional Meteorological Centre has sounded a heavy rainfall alert for Odisha, targeting northern coastal and interior districts from July 13 to July 16.
The warning comes as a trough line, stretching from southwest Uttar Pradesh to the northwest Bay of Bengal, and a cyclonic circulation over northeast Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, intensifies monsoon activity across the region.
Meteorologist Rajshree VPM reported that Odisha experienced 55% below-average rainfall in the past 24 hours. However, a significant uptick is expected starting Sunday, with widespread showers, thunderstorms, and lightning sweeping across multiple districts.
Yellow warnings have been issued for July 13, urging public caution and preparedness.
Districts such as Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar are projected to bear the brunt of heavy precipitation, while areas like Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, and Sundargarh may receive moderate rainfall with thunderstorms.
Rainfall statistics from June 1 to July 12 show Odisha receiving 416.7 mm of rain, 29% above the normal average.
While districts like Deogarh, Koraput, and Sundargarh have experienced excess rainfall, regions including Cuttack, Kendrapara, and Balasore remain below normal levels. Gajapati, Nuapada, and Puri continue to face a deficiency.
Authorities have advised residents to seek shelter during lightning activity, and district collectors have been directed to remain alert under instructions from the Special Relief Commissioner.
