Guhaldihi to Shine as Odisha’s New Craft Village, Showcasing Sabai Grass Heritage
(OT Webdesk)In a move to preserve indigenous craftsmanship and boost rural tourism, the Odisha government has announced the development of Guhaldihi village in Mayurbhanj district as an integrated art and craft hub.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who also oversees the Tourism portfolio, unveiled the initiative on social media, aligning it with the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign.
Located just 12 km from Baripada, Guhaldihi is renowned for its Sabai grass craft—a traditional art form practiced predominantly by women artisans.
The project will feature dedicated zones for weaving, exhibitions, and tourist engagement, offering immersive cultural experiences to visitors.
Officials believe the initiative will generate sustainable livelihoods, especially for tribal communities, while integrating local artisans into Odisha’s expanding tourism circuit.
Sabai grass, known for its durability and eco-friendliness, is used to create baskets, mats, lamps, and ropes—products that will now reach a wider audience through this platform.
Strategically positioned near Similipal National Park, the craft village is expected to serve as a cultural gateway for tourists, adding depth to their journey and supporting grassroots entrepreneurship.
