Govt Debunks Mileage Myths Around E20 Ethanol Fuel
(OT Webdesk)The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has officially refuted viral claims suggesting that E20 petrol—India’s 20% ethanol-blended fuel—significantly reduces vehicle mileage or damages engines.
In a statement released on August 5, the ministry emphasised that these concerns lack scientific backing.
For vehicles originally designed for E10 petrol and later calibrated for E20, mileage reduction is minimal—just 1–2%. In other vehicles, the drop may range between 3–6%, the ministry clarified.
E20-compliant vehicles have been available since April 2023, equipped with upgraded components to maintain performance.
While older vehicles may require minor rubber or gasket replacements after 20,000–30,000 km, these are low-cost fixes typically handled during routine servicing.
Beyond technical reassurance, the ministry highlighted the environmental and economic advantages of ethanol blending. Ethanol, derived from crops like sugarcane and maize, emits 50–65% fewer greenhouse gases than petrol.
Since 2014–15, ethanol use has saved India Rs 1.4 lakh crore in foreign exchange and generated Rs 1.2 lakh crore in payments to farmers.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to cleaner mobility, stating that E20 fuel enhances engine performance and ride quality in modern vehicles—making it a cornerstone of India’s sustainable transport strategy.
