GMU Professor Suspended After Student Levels Sexual Exploitation Allegations

(OT Webdesk): Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) in Sambalpur, Odisha, has suspended Dr. Gopikanta Suna, an Assistant Professor at the School of Education, following his arrest on serious allegations of sexual exploitation.

The decision comes after a report from the Mahila Police Station linked to case No. 56 Dt.16.07.2025 under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The allegations against Dr. Suna involve a 20-year-old second-year integrated B.Ed student, who accused him of entering into a physical relationship under the false promise of marriage, only to abandon her later.

The student lodged a formal complaint, leading to Dr. Suna’s arrest and subsequent suspension by the university’s Vice Chancellor. The university order mandates that Dr. Suna remain at the headquarters of the Chairman, Post Graduate Council, GMU, Sambalpur, and prohibits him from leaving without prior permission.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly in light of a recent similar case in Balasore, where another student’s self-immolation over alleged harassment highlighted systemic issues in educational institutions.

Local reports suggest the student’s complaint was filed on July 16, 2025, prompting immediate police action. Dr. Suna was produced in a local court following his arrest, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Community reactions have been strong, with students and faculty demanding stricter oversight and accountability. Social media platforms are abuzz with discussions, reflecting public anger over the alleged exploitation and calls for justice.

The Odisha Higher Education Department has been notified, and the case has drawn attention to the need for robust mechanisms to protect students from harassment.

As the investigation unfolds, this case adds to the growing discourse on safety and ethical conduct in academia, with authorities urged to ensure a thorough and transparent process.
