Bhubaneswar( OT Webdesk): Nandankanan Zoological Park has achieved a remarkable milestone with the successful hatching of gharial crocodile eggs after a 10-year gap.
This year, 14 gharial hatchlings have been born, marking a crucial step in conservation efforts.
Gharials, a critically endangered species native to Indian rivers, had stopped breeding in the zoo since 2015 due to infections affecting their eggs.
However, recent interventions, including artificial incubation methods and environmental improvements, have led to this historic breakthrough.
Officials have reported over 30 gharial eggs, which are currently under close monitoring for proper development. Experts anticipate that around 50 gharial hatchlings could emerge this year, boosting conservation efforts significantly.
The revival of gharial breeding at Nandankanan symbolises a major victory in species preservation, offering hope for the future of these unique crocodiles.
This achievement is expected to contribute to ongoing studies on gharial reproduction and habitat protection.
