German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Visit India: Key Talks with PM Modi in Ahmedabad

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will arrive in India on January 12 for a two‑day official visit, marking his first bilateral engagement outside NATO and the European Union since assuming office.

The visit underscores Germany’s intent to deepen strategic ties with India amid shifting global dynamics.

Merz is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad, where discussions will focus on trade, investment, technology cooperation, and defence collaboration.

Accompanied by a delegation of 25 German business leaders, including CEOs of major firms, the Chancellor aims to explore new opportunities in India’s growing market.

Beyond diplomacy, Merz will engage with India’s cultural and academic landscape. His itinerary includes attending the International Kite Festival and visiting the historic Sabarmati Ashram.

On January 13, he will travel to Bengaluru to interact with researchers at the Indian Institute of Science and tour Bosch’s campus, highlighting Germany’s strong industrial and technological presence in India.

The visit is expected to strengthen the India–Germany partnership, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in global governance, innovation, and economic growth.
