Fresh Low-Pressure System Brewing Over Bay of Bengal; Durga Puja Festivities May Face Rain Disruptions

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for a low-pressure system likely to form over the northern and central Bay of Bengal around October 1, raising concerns over potential rainfall during Durga Puja celebrations across eastern India.

According to IMD forecasts, an upper air cyclonic circulation is expected to emerge over the north Andaman Sea on September 30.

This may evolve into a low-pressure area the following day and intensify into a depression by October 2.

The system is likely to bring light to moderate rainfall across coastal Odisha, West Bengal, and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Meteorologists warn that the northwestern Bay of Bengal is already experiencing turbulent conditions due to an active depression near the Odisha-Andhra coast.

The new system could compound rainfall intensity, particularly during Saptami to Dashami—key days of Durga Puja festivities.

Districts in southern Bengal, including South 24-Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram, are expected to receive heavier showers.

The IMD has advised pandal organisers and travellers to exercise caution, as intermittent rain and cloudy skies may affect outdoor events.

Fishermen have been strongly warned against venturing into the Bay of Bengal due to squally winds and rough sea conditions. Authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather pattern and will issue updated advisories as needed
