Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to PM Modi


Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, a native of Odisha, has been appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his appointment, and an official order was issued by the Department of Personnel Training (DoPT) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions on Saturday.
Das will serve in the role alongside P K Mishra, who continues as Principal Secretary-1 to the Prime Minister. His tenure will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, as per the official order.
A 1980-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, Das was appointed as RBI Governor in December 2018 and completed his six-year tenure on December 10, 2024. During his tenure, he navigated several economic challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Das earned global recognition as one of the top three central bankers worldwide for two consecutive years, as per the US-based magazine Global Finance. In 2024, he received an ‘A+’ rating in the magazine’s Central Banker Report Cards.
With a career spanning decades, Das has served in key roles in both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments. He has held positions as Economic Affairs Secretary, Revenue Secretary, and Fertilizers Secretary at different points in his IAS career.
