Bhubaneswar, July 14, (OT Webdesk) – A 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College remains in a critical state at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after allegedly attempting self-immolation due to sustained harassment. Her condition continues to deteriorate as she undergoes dialysis for severe kidney failure, and is reliant on advanced life support and intubation.
Medical experts report that the student has sustained 90–95% deep burns, with major damage to her kidneys and lungs. A 10-member team from departments including cardiology, pulmonology, and plastic surgery is monitoring her around the clock. Despite constant care and video consultations with specialists from AIIMS Delhi, doctors have ruled out the possibility of airlifting her due to the risks involved.
In response to the incident, the Odisha government has launched a high-level inquiry, deploying a three-member committee to investigate institutional lapses and administrative negligence. The college principal and accused Head of Department, Sameer Kumar Sahoo, have been suspended. Sahoo, now in police custody, faces serious allegations of prolonged mental harassment that allegedly drove the student to the extreme act.
The case has triggered widespread outrage across Odisha, raising urgent questions about student safety, institutional accountability, and mental health support in educational environments.
