Flood Crisis Deepens in Sundargarh: Brahmani River Overflows, Villages Cut Off

Flood threat in Sundargarh

Sundargarh, (OT Webdesk) — Torrential rains under a prolonged low-pressure system have triggered a serious flood threat in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, particularly the Koida region.

With the Brahmani River swelling over the past three days, several low-lying villages have been submerged, and critical infrastructure has been rendered unusable.

The Soyamba bridge, now submerged under nearly two feet of water, has completely cut off access between the Soyamba and Relhatu panchayats.

Authorities have restricted all movement across the bridge, citing dangerous currents that could lead to accidents.

Villages such as Lalei and Tanjoda along the riverbanks are on high alert.

Local residents voice frustration at what they describe as an annual ordeal, marked by property damage, travel disruption, and limited access to emergency services.

The Siajod bridge near Banei has once again gone under water, raising fears of repeat incidents where vehicles were previously swept away.

“This happens every year,” lamented a resident. “The river swells, the bridges disappear, and we are stranded.”

The local administration has intensified rainfall monitoring and placed emergency response teams on standby.

Citizens have been urged to avoid flood-prone routes and remain cautious as more rain is forecasted in the coming days.
