Flood Alert Issued in Odisha as Subarnarekha and Baitarani Rivers Breach Danger Levels

Bhubaneswar, August 24 (OT Webdesk)— Incessant rainfall across Odisha has triggered a flood alert in several districts as the Subarnarekha and Baitarani rivers continue to swell beyond danger levels.

The Water Resources Department confirmed that the Subarnarekha River is currently flowing 0.5 meters above the danger mark, marking its fifth flood event this monsoon season. Projections suggest water levels may reach 11.4 meters by evening.

The Baitarani basin recorded 42.57 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while the upper Brahmani and Mahanadi catchments received 35 mm and 31 mm, respectively.

These surges have intensified inflow into the Hirakud Dam, which now stands at 621.65 feet. Authorities have opened 12 sluice gates to manage the inflow of 1.98 lakh cusecs and outflow of 1.60 lakh cusecs. Officials have clarified that there is no immediate flood threat along the Mahanadi River.

District administrations in Balasore, Bhadrak, and Keonjhar have been placed on high alert, with emergency teams mobilised to monitor vulnerable areas. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow safety advisories as the situation evolves.
