Five Students Expelled from Central University Over Vulgar WhatsApp Comments

Koraput, Odisha — In a swift disciplinary move, Central University, Koraput, has expelled five students—including a first-year girl—from its Agriculture Science department for allegedly posting vulgar remarks about faculty members in a private WhatsApp group.

The group, initially created for academic discussions, became the centre of controversy when obscene messages targeting the department head and other professors were shared. A fellow student forwarded the messages to the department head, prompting a formal complaint to the Vice-Chancellor.

A five-member disciplinary committee was formed and submitted its findings within 48 hours, citing violations under Ordinance 49, Section 6(xxii). The university acted on the recommendations and expelled all five students without conducting counselling sessions or consulting their parents.

The decision has sparked outrage among the parent community, who criticised the administration for its lack of transparency and haste. Allegations of bias have also surfaced, with one student receiving a “good conduct” certificate while others were marked as expelled.

In response, one student has approached the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, while another parent plans to escalate the matter to the President and the Union Education Minister.

The incident has triggered widespread concern across campus, with students and parents questioning the fairness of the disciplinary process and its long-term implications. The university now faces growing pressure to revisit its procedures and ensure due process in future cases.
