Diarrhoea Cases Declining in Odisha as Govt Intensifies Preventive Measures

Odisha diarrhoea outbreak response

Bhubaneswar, June 17, (OT Webdesk): The Odisha government has reported a steady decline in diarrhoea cases across multiple districts, including Jajpur, Kendujhar, Bhadrak, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal. In a review meeting held at Lok Seva Bhavan, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja assessed the situation alongside health officials and district collectors.

According to officials, proactive steps have led to significant containment of the outbreak. Increased testing, widespread sanitation efforts, and enhanced public awareness have contributed to reducing infection rates. Hospitals in the affected districts are witnessing fewer new admissions, with many patients recovering and being discharged under strict medical supervision.

Health Secretary Ashwati S emphasised the importance of preventive measures, including the purification of drinking water sources in both government and private facilities. Public awareness campaigns have been expanded, ensuring communities seek medical attention in the early stages of symptoms.

Field teams, including ASHA and Anganwadi workers, are actively conducting door-to-door assessments and distributing essential medication. Over 40 lakh halogen tablets, 6 lakh ORS packets, and 400 packets of bleaching powder have been supplied to affected areas.

Jajpur district reported 64 new admissions, with 45 patients recovering. A total of 210 individuals remain under treatment across the district. In other affected areas, hospitals are closely monitoring new cases and ensuring proper sanitation measures are enforced.

Despite the decline in new cases, officials urge continued vigilance, particularly in areas prone to waterborne diseases during the monsoon season. The government has instructed district administrations to maintain strict hygiene protocols and sustain public health awareness campaigns over the next 10 days.

A central health team visiting the affected districts confirmed that the outbreak has not spread from one region to another, indicating localised infections. Officials maintain that consistent intervention and monitoring are crucial in preventing further cases.

The Chief Secretary reaffirmed the state’s commitment to tackling waterborne diseases effectively. “We must remain cautious and ensure every necessary step is taken to mitigate the risk of further infections,” Ahuja stated.
