Delhi-NCR’s Battle Against Smog: Stage-I GRAP Activated!

Delhi-NCR air pollution

(  OT Webdesk) : As air pollution levels continue to deteriorate in Delhi-NCR, authorities have stepped up efforts to mitigate environmental hazards.

On May 16, 2025, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) after Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) hit 278, placing it in the ‘Poor’ category.

The 27-point action plan now in effect includes stringent measures targeting vehicular emissions, dust control at construction sites, and enforcement of environmental regulations.

Some of the key directives are:

  • Stricter dust control at construction and demolition sites
  • Regular waste collection and disposal to prevent illegal dumping
  • Traffic regulations to curb congestion and emissions
  • A ban on overaged vehicles to limit pollution
  • Encouragement of eco-friendly practices such as proper vehicle maintenance, avoiding firecrackers, and reporting pollution violations through mobile apps.

Officials stress the importance of citizen cooperation, urging Delhiites to follow guidelines like reducing vehicle idling time, maintaining correct tyre pressure, and using public transport whenever possible.

Authorities will continuously track air quality trends, and if pollution levels persist or worsen, stricter measures may be enforced under Stage-II GRAP.
