Bhubaneswar, Jan 27: Police in Odisha’s Ganjam district rescued four individuals, including a young man working for a financial firm in Delhi, who were allegedly kidnapped and held hostage in a forested area near Chikiti.
According to sources, the victims were confined in a house on the property of one Nutana Patra, where they were threatened with a cobra and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore.
The situation came to light when one of the hostages managed to escape by scaling the wall of the house. The terrified youth ran to the local tehsildar office, which was approximately 200 meters away, and raised the alarm. The Tehsildar then coordinated with the Nuagaon police, who swiftly rescued the remaining three hostages.
Chikiti Tehsildar described the escapee as “losing his senses” and in a state of panic, pleading for help. Following the rescue operation, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek confirmed the detention of one individual in connection with the abduction.
The police suspect a group of five kidnappers, who had transported the victims from Bhubaneswar and demanded the hefty ransom. The case includes charges of ransom, attempted murder, and cruelty against animals under the Wildlife Protection Act. The young man from Delhi had been in Odisha to sanction a loan to a man in Berhampur, accompanied by others from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
