Deepavali Added to UNESCO Intangible Heritage List | India’s Festival of Lights Gains Global Recognition

In a historic move, UNESCO has added Deepavali, India’s festival of lights, to its prestigious Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The decision was taken at the international committee’s meeting this year, marking a new milestone in India’s cultural journey.

Deepavali, celebrated across India and by millions worldwide, symbolises spirituality, diversity, and social unity.

Its recognition underscores the festival’s role in preserving traditions while enhancing their global relevance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the announcement as a proud moment for the nation. Sharing his thoughts, he described Deepavali as “the soul of our civilisation,” embodying illumination and righteousness.

He emphasised that the festival’s values, rooted in Lord Rama’s ideals, will continue to guide generations.

This is not the first time UNESCO has honoured Indian traditions, but Deepavali’s inclusion adds a new dimension to India’s cultural identity on the world stage.

The recognition is expected to further boost the festival’s global popularity and strengthen India’s cultural diplomacy.
