Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: The Deep Depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next six hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Wednesday.
At 11:30 am, the system was located about 110 km east of Trincomalee, 350 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 450 km southeast of Puducherry, and 530 km south-southeast of Chennai. Moving north-northwest at a speed of 10 km/h over the past six hours, it is predicted to continue its north-northwestward path and strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the next few hours. The system is expected to move towards the Tamil Nadu coast, skirting the Sri Lankan coastline over the next two days.
IMD noted a strong consensus among weather models regarding its movement, intensity, and potential landfall. Most models suggest the system will intensify into a marginal cyclonic storm between November 27 and November 29, followed by gradual weakening. The storm, if it intensifies, will be named ‘Fengal,’ a name suggested by Saudi Arabia, reflecting a blend of linguistic and cultural traditions from the region.
