Death toll rises to six in Puri firecracker explosion tragedy

Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), May 31: In the aftermath of the firecracker explosion in Puri on May 29, two more individuals have tragically passed away, raising the death toll to six. A scientific team and forensic experts have commenced an investigation into the incident since Friday.

Notably, Raju Rao, the alleged main perpetrator, passed away yesterday, while his son remains in critical condition. Another individual involved, Chandan Bhoi, is also in critical condition.

Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena visited the site yesterday to gather information about the explosion. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has sanctioned an ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Furthermore, he has ordered a high-level probe into the incident by the Additional Chief Secretary and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC).

Expressing grief, the Chief Minister took to his official social media handle to pray for the swift recovery of the injured. He stated, “Sorry to hear about the accident near Puri Narendra pond.” Additionally, he assured that the government would ensure proper treatment for the injured, with all medical expenses to be covered by the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He concluded by extending wishes for the speedy recovery of all affected and offering prayers to Lord Jagannath.
