Bahuda Yatra 2025

Dakhina Moda’ Signals Return Journey of Lord Jagannath: Puri Gears Up for Bahuda Yatra 2025

PURI, July 2(OT Webdesk): As the sacred Rath Yatra 2025 reaches its midpoint, divine anticipation fills the air in Puri with the observance of ‘Dakhina Moda’, a ritual that symbolically pivots the journey homeward for the deities.

The three grand chariots—Nandighosa, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana—today turn southward from Gundicha Temple, marking the official commencement of Bahuda Yatra, scheduled for July 5.

The Dakhina Moda, performed on Shasthi Tithi, aligns the chariots toward Nakachana Dwara, the southern entrance of Gundicha Temple, preparing the divine entourage’s return to Srimandir.

On July 1, the emotionally charged ritual of Hera Panchami captivated thousands.

In a poignant display of divine drama, Goddess Mahalaxmi, feeling left behind, made her symbolic protest by damaging Lord Jagannath’s chariot before returning to the temple, depicting the spiritual tension between the divine couple.

The Rath Yatra festivities don’t end here. The faithful eagerly await:

  • Suna Besha (July 6): The deities will be adorned in opulent gold ornaments at the Lion’s Gate—a visual spectacle.
  • Adhara Pana: A traditional sweet drink offered to the deities atop their chariots.
  • Niladri Bije: The ceremonial re-entry of the Trinity into the sanctum, symbolising reconciliation and divine conclusion.

As rhythmic chants echo through Puri’s streets and the faithful prepare for Bahuda, Odisha once again finds itself at the heart of devotion, tradition, and grandeur.
