Cyclonic Circulation Triggers Rain Alert Across Odisha; IMD Warns of Heavy Downpour

Bhubaneswar, Sept 1: A cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha has prompted a rain alert across the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the development of a low-pressure system by September 2.

Southern Odisha districts—Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangapur, and Kalahandi—are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Koraput, cautioning residents about potential flooding and waterlogging.

Additional warnings have been extended to Rayagada, Gajapati, Balangir, and Nuapada. Northern districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, and Khordha are advised to brace for thunderstorms and lightning.

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors during peak rainfall hours and avoid low-lying areas. Disaster response teams are on standby, and local administrations have initiated precautionary measures to mitigate damage.

The IMD continues to monitor the evolving system, with further updates expected as the low-pressure area develops.
