Cyclone Updates: IMD Confirms No Direct Threat to Odisha as Bay of Bengal Systems Intensify
Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: Odisha is set for a dry and cooler week despite two evolving weather systems over the Bay of Bengal sparking speculation of a winter cyclone.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified that neither system currently poses a direct threat to the state.
Meteorologists report that a disturbance originating from the Malacca Strait has strengthened into a deep depression and may intensify further as it tracks west‑northwest across the central Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, a second circulation near Sri Lanka is expected to evolve into a well‑marked low‑pressure area and later a depression within the next 24 hours.
Current IMD projections indicate that this system is also unlikely to move toward the Odisha coastline.
The IMD’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar forecasts dry weather across Odisha until December 2, with partly cloudy skies in some areas. No rainfall warnings have been issued beyond November 26.
Night temperatures are expected to drop by 2–3°C over the next two days, signalling the return of winter chill.
The only active advisory is a Yellow Warning for dense fog in parts of Koraput and Sundargarh until Wednesday morning. No further alerts are in place for the next six days, easing public concern about a potential cyclone.
