Cyclone Montha Triggers Red and Orange Alerts Across Odisha
Bhubaneswar, October 26, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for multiple districts in Odisha as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal.
Though the cyclone is expected to veer away from the coast after forming its eye, its peripheral impact will bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds starting on October 28.
Red and Orange Alerts Issued
On October 28, districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam are under a red warning, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall.
An orange alert has been sounded for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri.
The situation remains critical on October 29, with red alerts continuing for Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Rayagada. Orange alerts will cover Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir.
Wind Speeds and Damage Potential
Wind speeds are forecasted to reach 60–70 kmph in southern Odisha and 50–70 kmph along the coast, particularly in Puri, Khordha, and Kandhamal. The IMD warns of possible damage to thatched houses, uprooting of trees, and disruption of power and communication lines. Farmers are advised to take precautions to protect paddy and vegetable crops in low-lying areas.
Sea Advisory and Emergency Measures
The sea will remain dangerously rough from October 26 onward. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture out, and those already at sea are urged to return immediately.
The Special Relief Commissioner has directed all district administrations to remain on high alert. Rescue and relief teams are on standby, and coordination with the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) is ongoing.
Public Advisory
Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during heavy rainfall, and follow official weather updates. Farmers in vulnerable districts should take preventive steps to minimise crop losses.
