Cyclone Montha Triggers Red Alert in Odisha; Heavy Rainfall Predicted Across Southern Districts

Bhubaneswar, Oct 27: Cyclone Montha, brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is advancing toward the Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to intensify further before landfall on October 28.

While Odisha may not face a direct hit, the state is bracing for widespread rainfall and gusty winds across its southern and coastal districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall from October 27 to 29.

Wind speeds may reach 60–70 km/h, with gusts up to 80 km/h. Ports have been placed under danger signal no. 3, and fishermen have been strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea.

In response, the Odisha government has activated emergency protocols. All schools and Anganwadi centres in eight districts will remain closed until October 30.

Tourist destinations such as Gopalpur beach and Mahendragiri have been shut indefinitely. Over 900 residents in Gajapati have already been evacuated, with plans to relocate more than 4,000 people to safer locations.

Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari chaired a high-level review meeting, emphasising readiness across departments.

Fire services and ODRAF teams are on standby, control rooms have been activated, and essential supplies are being stocked in vulnerable areas.

As Cyclone Montha gains strength, authorities urge residents to remain indoors, follow official advisories, and prioritise safety.
