Cyclone Montha to Bring Heavy Rainfall to Odisha; Government Activates Emergency Protocols

Bhubaneswar, October 24, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for Cyclone Montha, a moderate storm expected to form over the Bay of Bengal and impact Odisha with heavy rainfall and gusty winds from October 27 to 29.

The system, currently a low-pressure area, is projected to intensify into a depression by October 25 and evolve into a cyclonic storm by October 27.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 70–75 km/h, with landfall likely near the Andhra Pradesh coast. While the cyclone is not expected to be severe, its influence will trigger widespread rain across Odisha.

The IMD has issued a yellow warning for coastal and adjoining districts starting October 25, forecasting light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and winds of 30–40 km/h. Fishermen have been advised to avoid sea travel from October 26 to 29 due to rough conditions.

District-wise Rainfall Forecast:

  • October 27: Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri.
  • October 28: Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Ganjam.
  • October 29: Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Jajpur.
