Cyclone likely to hit Bangladesh, Bengal; fishermen advised to return to shore

Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), May 23: A cyclone is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal and move towards the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday.

“Yesterday’s low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards and developed into a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal by 0830 hrs IST today, the 23rd of May, 2024. It is expected to continue moving northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of the 24th. Subsequently, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of the 25th of May,” stated a tweet from the IMD regional center.

The tweet further added, “The system is expected to move nearly northwards and approach the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal by the evening of the 26th of May as a severe cyclonic storm.”
IMD Bhubaneswar scientist Umashankar Dash also shared on his X-handle that the system is likely to concentrate into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24 and intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 25.

The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the south Bay of Bengal until May 24, the central Bay of Bengal until May 26, and the north Bay of Bengal from May 24 onwards until May 27. Fishermen already at sea are advised to return to the coast immediately.
