Cyclone Brewing Over Andaman Sea: Odisha May Escape Major Impact | IMD Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a low-pressure system over the Malacca Strait and adjoining South Andaman Sea has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area.

Meteorologists warn that the system could develop into a cyclone by November 26, tracking west-northwestwards and strengthening further over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.

Early forecasts suggest Odisha may escape the cyclone’s full brunt, as the system is likely to veer towards Myanmar before approaching the state. Even if the cyclone reaches peak strength, initial assessments indicate Odisha will face limited impact.

Multiple weather models, including GFS and ECMWF, project different trajectories and intensities, with some predicting weakening in early December.

Odisha’s disaster management authorities remain on high alert, prioritising preparedness despite reduced risk.

Experts emphasise that tropical systems in the Bay of Bengal are notoriously unpredictable, with rapid intensification and sudden course shifts challenging forecasters.

Residents are advised to stay updated with IMD bulletins and follow official safety advisories.
