Bhubaneswar, Dec 18: Family members of a contractual worker who died in an accident at Paradip Port staged a sit-in protest on Tuesday night. The deceased, Satya Subrat Dalei, hailed from Nabadia village in the Kujang block of Jagatsinghpur district and was working under a private contractor at the port.
Sources indicate that Dalei suffered critical injuries in an accident on Sunday within the port premises. Although he received medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
In the wake of his death, Dalei’s family and fellow workers organized a sit-in protest with his body, demanding a compensation of Rs 50 lakh and a job for a family member. They braved the winter chill as they continued their demonstration throughout the night.
Upon being alerted, police arrived at the scene to negotiate with the protesters and restore normalcy.
This incident follows a similar case in October when another contractual worker, Bholanath Swain, died in an accident at the port. Swain’s family faced significant difficulties in retrieving his body, leading to unrest when they expressed their frustration by ransacking the security office at Paradip Port.
